Fiercely the Red Sun Descending / Burned His Way Along the Heavens
This piece struck me instantly because it reminded me of welding. Before I came to college at UNCA I was in school in Indiana for industrial welding. There was nothing more satisfying than seeing the bright bursts of light and showers of chemicals. Knowing that you’re slightly out of control but can use the chaos of the light to guide you. When you wear the mask everything is black except the flame and sparks and those are what you use to make your lines. The incredible light in this painting is encompassing what was dark around it, making even the murky water shine. There is great strength in the light and I found looking at it to be enormously satisfying.
