Hudson River School

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) Evening in Arcady, 1843 Oil on canvas

I like this painting for many reasons. It looks like a place where I would want to go. A far away place that seems magical and full of adventure. I love how there are people in the painting, but they are not the focus of the painting. They are dwarfed by the immensity of nature, which surrounds them. It’s a perspective we often forget when we become wrapped up in our daily lives.  I enjoy this romantic depiction of nature. It feels like we are being given a window looking into a special hidden place, where something interesting is to be found around every corner.
