The south side of Inscription Rock (now El Morro National Monument), in New Mexico – 1873

I love that the geological features of the land in this collection are truly the centerpiece of his work. The sheer enormity of this intricate rock formation (now national monument) is nothing short of divine. He did an amazing job of capturing the essence of the desert’s vastness and harsh conditions by taking this photo from a distance, including a huge amount of this natural stucture. The time of day he chose to take this photo allow for the emphasis of the many crevices that shape this formation. I ahve only been to the southwestern US deserts one time, and viewing this image reminds me of the harsh beauty there is to be found there. I want to go back there and apprecate stuctures like this in person again.
