This picture shows a lot to me. I read that o’Sullivan’s job was to take photographs that would attract Americans to settle in the west. If I were looking at this picture as a potential settler, I would see a land that was beautiful, but also harsh. I would envision a difficult journey through a desert, where food and water are scarce. I would be intrigued by the vast lands, where humans have made no mark, but cautioned by the smallness of the carriage and horses, cautioned by their insignificance in such a place that is better suited to scorpions and lizards than humans.
