Bas Jan Ader

Broken Fall (organic) 1971

I was intrigued by all of this artist’s works and his use of gravity and falling. I connected with this piece in particular because I felt as though it captured the feeling of just barely holding on. As he hangs and sways from the tree it is as though he has accepted his fall as inevitable. His drooped posture and movement further and further to the end of the branch indicate to me that he has given up and is no longer fighting his unfortunate fate. Just when he begins to look almost comfortable hanging on to the tree he drops into the water below. There is a definite eerie quality to his work and this work in particular. I got the sense that he did not have very much concern for his life or safety.
